The Williamsburg Area Beekeepers Association (WABA) held its April 2025 monthly meeting, offering members a valuable opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in practical beekeeping. This month’s meeting was hosted by Scott McCoy, a well-respected figure in the local beekeeping community. A Master Beekeeper and past president and vice president of WABA, Scott also runs the successful Bodhi Bee Farms LLC, making him both an experienced educator and a seasoned entrepreneur in the field.
Scott’s presentation centered on a crucial set of skills for any growing beekeeper: how to make a nucleus hive (commonly referred to as a “nuc”), how to split beehives, and how to effectively grow an apiary. Attendees were treated to a clear, engaging, and hands-on session that broke down the steps of each process. From identifying the right timing and methods for making splits to best practices for introducing queens and managing resources in small colonies, Scott offered practical tips that reflected both his depth of knowledge and real-world experience.
Members of WABA, ranging from beginners to seasoned beekeepers, appreciated the detailed guidance and were eager to ask questions and share their own challenges. Scott emphasized sustainable growth, encouraging attendees to think strategically about their hive management and the long-term health of their bees.
This meeting was yet another example of WABA’s commitment to supporting its members through education and community-building. With experts like Scott McCoy leading the way, the local beekeeping community continues to thrive and grow—one hive at a time.
Scott McCoy was also our luck winner of the Monthly WABA Raffle! Congrats Scott!
